Good organisation, effective teamworking and good awareness and attention to health and safety aspects of the warehousing operation are essential for successful warehousing. Wherever speed of delivery is required, there is temptation to cut corners and in so doing increase the dangers for other people working alongside. Effective management requires good systems to be supported by the right knowledge and culture amongst the workforce.

Companies in this sector we have worked with include:

  • ACS & T Ltd.
  • Cable Management Systems Ltd.
  • Sanko Gosei Ltd.

    Example of Programme undertaken

    Programme Details
The client organisation operate a number of strategically located depots across the country. PILOT was invited to run a series of courses across all areas of the business. The courses selected were City and Guilds Distribution, Warehousing and Storage NVQ, Technical Services NVQ and the Certificate in Health and Safety.

    Preparation
The client company runs a fully integrated cold storage and transportation service, collecting goods from the manufacturer's site, storing them at the optimum temperature, making up loads against call off and delivering to individual retail outlets. The operational temperatures within the cold stores are held fixed at around -10 to -15 degrees, requiring substantial thermal protective clothing and special procedures for entering and working within the stores. The Pilot Trainer/assessors were therefore trained in advance in the health and safety procedures which applied to the facility.

The company operated a 3 shift system, with the 2 day shifts rotating and a permanent night shift. This required the Trainer/assessors to undertake the course delivery late into the night as well as throughout the day.

    Course Delivery
The courses were successfully completed at each storage facility.

Access to the engineers was straightforward. Observations could be undertaken at any time. Discussions, questioning and work on Course Portfolio had to be undertaken whenever suitable breaks arose in the progress of work. This caused delay as pressure of work was continuous and particularly important with sequential operations for any one job. To cater for this pressure on the engineers and recognising their capacity to work under their own initiative, Pilot's Assessor arranged to visit on a weekly basis. This enabled the engineers to find some time during the week in which to progress the written component of their course. Despite the ongoing time pressures for production, the weekly arrangement worked well.

    Outcomes
All learners gained their qualifications. Following the courses, a series of Chartered Institute of Environmental Health courses in Basic Food Hygiene was run for the Midlands operation and a DVD was produced covering the health and safety requirements for staff, drivers and contractors visiting the premises.
