Pressings and Stampings

Noise and protection against personal injury are key features of working in a traditional press shop. The demand for efficient production can often tempt operators to avoid safety measures which may adversely affect the speed of production. Awareness of safety responsibilities and an understanding and acceptance of the safe working practices within the workshop are key features of effective operations. Gaining this shared understanding often requires much more than placing relevant notices in prominent positions - it can require a complete culture change for both the management and the workforce.

Companies in this sector we have worked with include:

  • Hampton Works (Pressings) Ltd.
  • JTB Pressings Ltd.

    Example of Programme undertaken

    Programme Details
Pilot was invited to deliver the nationally accredited City and Guilds course, Performing Manufacturing Operations to a small team of machine setters and operators. They were run in the factory, working with Franchise Partner, Dudley College.

    Preparation
Initially, there was a certain degree of anxiety about the requirement to work for a national award. Access to all participants was good and the management was very supportive of the programme.

    Course Delivery
As the programme was delivered, anxiety slowly changed to confidence and enthusiasm under the guidance of Pilot's Trainer/Assessor, Raj Skandarajah, and the constant support of the senior Management team comprising the Managing Director and Operations Manager.

    Outcomes
All participants proved their competence to work at or above the national standards. They show greater confidence and a justifiable pride in their achievement. They requested that they continue with further courses, again with PILOT as the provider.

The management is delighted with the success of their team in gaining what, for some, will be their first ever formal qualification. As a result of the Company's emphasis on training, it has been able to open up a new production facility and quickly secured a £1M per annum contract with a new customer.
