  • NOTICE: Through 2010 and 2011 all nationally accredited qualifications are being revised by their relevant Awarding Bodies to meet the requirements of the government’s newly introduced, national Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

In many cases the courses remain virtually unaltered but have added details of “Credit” values ascribed to the individual Units that are required to be completed to achieve the qualification.

Under the QCF, new qualification grades have been introduced: an Award, Certificate and Diploma, for which a specified minimum number of Credits will have to be achieved. These grades are expected to be available for each subject at each Level of difficulty. The grades available and the numbers of Credits required for each grade can however differ for each subject and Level.

The new information is being introduced onto our website following its availability from the relevant Awarding Bodies. The revised courses are identified by the acronym QCF at the end of their title. Please contact us for the very latest information.

    and
    Certificate in Team Leading

    WHO ARE THEY FOR?
These courses will appeal to both practicing and aspiring team or cell leaders who have some responsibility for the operation of a team or a discrete production activity or who allocate work and resources and wish to develop their management skills or have their present ability rewarded with an internationally recognised qualification.

Participants are able to choose from a diverse range of options to build their qualification. This enables you or your employer to custom build a qualification focusing on the key areas of first line management that are most relevant to the demands of a specific role, industry or organisation. The qualifications can thus be fully tailored to meet the varying needs of participants across all employment sectors.

The Award is a starting point for the investigation of the skills and knowledge for both practising and potential team leaders and supervisors.

The Certificate is a broad-based qualification which gives a choice of options to create a well targeted learning package to include a selection of the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required by today's team leader. It builds on and broadens the skills and knowledge gained in undertaking the Award.

The qualifications have been established by the leading UK management training authority, the Institute of Leadership & Management, (I.L.M.).

BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS: The courses provide you with:

    • Recognition of your competency at work, against the industry's nationally agreed standards
    • A qualification which is yours and yours alone, which is recognised internationally
    • A qualification gained at your place of work - no requirement to attend a training establishment
    • An opportunity to test yourself against the national standard and to develop yourself to exceed them
    • A basis from which you can move on to further develop yourself
    • A range of choices of topics to be covered to provide a tailor-made qualification

    BENEFITS TO EMPLOYERS: The courses:

    • Provide first line managers with the key tools essential to being effective in their management roles
    • Save on training costs by providing effective learning and assessment that relates the learning directly to the work procedures of your organisation
    • Free-up middle and senior managers from undertaking supervisory duties as a stop-gap
    • Identify employees with development potential and confirm individual learning needs
    • Save time and money by being undertaken at the place of work and being tailored to match the individual's requirements
    • Achieve results with minimal disruption to work activities
    • Help meet legal requirements for employee induction and health and safety training

    AIMS OF THE COURSES
The aim of the Courses is to combine the achievement of a formal qualification with an exploration of a wide variety of key management practices that are relevant to the participant. These are to be selected from a comprehensive range of fundamental topics embracing the skills and knowledge required for effective team leading.

The Award is a concise qualification designed to give learners a basic knowledge of the various roles, functions and responsibilities of a team leader and the limits of their authority and accountability.

The Certificate builds and broadens the skills and knowledge gained in the Award. It is a broad ranging investigation of team leading skills and knowledge for both practising and potential team leaders and supervisors.

    COURSE CONTENTS
The Award is a short introduction to effective team leading, with the Certificate a comprehensive study of a wide range of the most important skills and knowledge requirements.

The Award consists of a mandatory unit: 'Developing yourself as a team leader', plus additional work to be selected from a short list of options. This provides a good starting point for team/cell leaders who are new to their roles or for aspiring leaders who wish to gain a solid understanding of the principles and practicalities of team leading. All topics completed for this course can be credited towards the full Certificate in Team Leading.

The Certificate includes mandatory work which explores practical techniques in motivating teams, plus planning and monitoring work and a mini-project. Further work is selected from a wide range of options.

Both Courses cover the exploration of a range of fundamental team leading disciplines.

The knowledge element required to achieve the qualification is delivered through a series of Work-shops arranged as appropriate at the workplace. This and the work on the mini-project will be supported by a series of trainer visits to the Candidate’s workplace, spread throughout the Course programme.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no formal entry requirements. Participants are not required to undertake the Award before the Certificate. Participants should ideally be involved in team leading activities, with tightly defined areas of responsibility or limited spans of control of operations.

COURSE ASSESSMENT:Qualification is achieved by satisfactory reflective review plus, depending on the optional topics selected, a combination of: reflective reviews, oral briefings, case studies, short answer questions, work-based assignments or centre-devised alternatives.
